Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has named a committee to lead the implementation of affordable housing in the city under the Affordable Housing Act, 2024.

The committee will oversee low-cost housing programs, ensuring coordination and progress across the capital.

In a gazette notice dated May 7, Sakaja appointed six members to the County Rural and Affordable Housing Committee.

The notice states: "I, Sakaja Arthur Johnson, Governor, Nairobi City County, appoint the following persons as members of the County Rural and Affordable Housing Committee."

Chris Abuga will serve as Non-Executive Chairperson of the committee, while Patrick Mbogo, the County Executive Committee Member in charge of housing, joins as a member by virtue of his position.

Other members include Samuel Ouma Oloo, representing a registered traders’ association; Grace Wairimu Ngugi, representing residential associations; and Rose Ogonga, representing Nairobi residents. Lydia Mathia, Chief Officer responsible for housing, was appointed Secretary.

The appointments are made under Section 34 of the Affordable Housing Act, 2024, which requires counties to form committees to support the national housing agenda locally.

The committee is tasked with working alongside the Affordable Housing Board to develop a county framework, advise the governor on housing programs, and prepare five-year and annual housing investment plans.

With Nairobi’s population rising, housing demand has increased sharply.

City Hall has identified nine estates for urban renewal: Bahati, Maringo, Jericho, Lumumba, Ziwani, Bondeni, Kariobangi, Embakasi, and Woodley.
